Lorenzo Cavagna

I have an extensive experience in the clinical management of Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathies (IIMs), encompassing not only muscle involvement but also extra-muscular manifestations such as lung, joint, and skin involvement. My clinical and research activities have been particularly focused on antisynthetase syndrome and anti-MDA5-associated disease. I currently serve as the European Principal Investigator of the CLASS project, funded by both ACR and EULAR, which aims to establish the first international classification criteria for antisynthetase syndrome. Through the CLASS project, we have developed a comprehensive database of over 4,000 patients diagnosed with antisynthetase syndrome or related mimicking conditions, including dermatomyositis, polymyositis, and immune-mediated necrotizing myopathies. I also chair the AENEAS (American and European NEtwork of Antisynthetase Syndrome) collaborative group—an international research network bringing together experts in Rheumatology, Neurology, and Pulmonology. This network laid the groundwork for the success of the CLASS project. Over the years, I have secured multiple research grants dedicated to IIMs, with a particular focus on anti-MDA5 syndrome and the pathogenic mechanisms of rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease (RP-ILD). I am actively involved in the European Reference Network ReCONNET, supported by the European Commission, where I served as the coordinator of the Myositis Sub-Core Network from 2017 to 2022. In terms of educational leadership, I was Editor of the “Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathies” chapter for the EULAR Online Course on Rheumatic Diseases—first as Lead Editor (2017–2020) and subsequently as Senior Editor (2020–2023). I serve as the local or national Principal Investigator (Italy) for several ongoing clinical trials in myositis. Additionally, I am the national coordinator of the Myositis Study Group of the Italian Society for Rheumatology (Gruppo Sirmione), and I contribute as a member of the Myositis Editors Group for the annual monographic issue on Myositis in the Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology journal. Finally, I bring strong, hands-on clinical expertise in the diagnosis and management of complex rheumatic diseases, particularly IIMs, through my daily involvement in the care of patients with challenging and severe cases. Clinically, we currently manage a cohort of more than 300 IIMs patients

I did not publish or create research products under another name.
